CTCS SEPTEMBER & BEYOND 2023
Dear Music Lovers

A highlight on our calendar is the Cape Town Baroque Festival which returns to the Baxter this coming Saturday for our annual collaboration, and this year we go to Spain to sample some Spanish Salads with the Lutesong Consort.A Spanish Salad – Vocal polyphony from Renaissance Spain’ .
The aptly named genre of ensaladas (literally: salads) flourished for the largest part of the 16th century in Spain, but only ten survive today. These highly entertaining religious allegories tells of redemption from various natural disasters, and contain a mix of references to popular songs, chant and onomatopoeic nonsense syllables in a variety of metres. The ensaladadeveloped from the sacred villancico tradition: the singing of songs in the vernacular at matins in chapels and cathedrals on feast days, or as theatrical performance spectacles before the Mass.

Featuring Lynelle Kenned (soprano), Lente Louw (mezzo-soprano), Jason Atherton (tenor), Keaton Manwaring (bass), and an ensemble of period instruments led by Erik Dippenaar.

The concert takes place in the Baxter Concert Hall at 11am on Saturday 23 September

Tickets are still available from Webtickets https://www.webtickets.co.za/v2/Event.aspx?itemid=1532138684

For your diary our next concert will follow soon after on 7 October with the multi talented Gareth Lubbe demonstrating his skills on both violin and viola with pianist Luis Magalhaes. The longtime friends will present a programme – Between Friends, focussing on the works and friendships of Robert and Clara Schumann and Brahms.  Then our final concert of the year is on 18 November with violinist Yevgeny Kutik. He will be joining forces with pianist Francois du Toit and cellist David Pinoit for works by Achron, Prokofiev and Brahms.  Both concerts take place in the Baxter Concert Hall at 11am.

In addition to our regular series we will also be presenting an “Extra” concert on 18th October with the Dante Quartet visiting from the UK – featuring South Africans Zoe Beyers and Ian Watson.  Tickets for this concert are at https://qkt.io/DanteCT and the concert takes place at St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Greenpoint. More details are available on our website – www.ctconcerts.co.za.

We look forward to seeing you this coming weekend and list below further concerts in the Baroque Festival.
