RECITAL NO. 8
DENIS KIRCH – flute
MARIKA HOFMEYR – piano
Saturday, 12 September, at 20:00
Acknowledged a remarkable talent from an early age, the French flautist DENIS KIRCH, who graduated with the highest honours from the Conservatoire National de Région Metz in 1973, had the opportunity of studying with some of the greatest masters of the flute - Marcel Moyse, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Robert Heriche, André Jaunet and Aurèle Nicolet. For many years he attended masterclasses in Switzerland given by the legendary Moyse who considered him to be one of his most talented and promising students, and was then admitted to the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg to pursue studies under the renowned Nicolet. He spent ten years in Israel, performing and teaching at various conservatories, including that of the University of Jerusalem. He returned to France in 1987 and is currently professor titulaire for flute at the Conservatories of Music in the 17th and 19th arrondissements of Paris. Well known in France for the emotional intensity of his performances, for beauty of tone and a virtuoso technique, Denis Kirch today plays extensively as a recitalist and chamber musician as well as giving masterclasses. He was a founding member of the European Soloists Ensemble, a group of leading instrumentalists regularly invited to appear at the major European music festivals. Mr Kirch also performs on occasion with the Dedalus Quintet, and with pianist Jean-Louis Caillard and clavecinist Ilton Wjuniski also gives recitals in Paris and other parts of Europe. He has recorded sound tracks for several films, and produced an acclaimed CD ('The Encounter') in 1998 with the jazz pianist and composer Jean-Pierre Mas.
Cape Town-born MARIKA HOFMEYR, who settled in France in 1990 and currently teaches at the Grasse Conservatory, graduated with distinction from UCT where she studied the piano under Lamar Crowson. Winning a scholarship to further her studies abroad she specialised in chamber music and song accompaniment at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, receiving the Kammermusikdiplom with distinction and a special prize for 'outstanding artistic achievement' from the Austrian government. In 1992 she was nominated Lauréate de la Fondation Menuhin, and in 1996, together with the Trio Cavatine, awarded First Prize at the A.F.A. Chamber Music Competition in New York. Today Ms Hofmeyr, who founded the Béla Trio in 1999, pursues an international career, participating in various music festivals in France and giving concerts in England, the United States, Japan and Austria both as a soloist and chamber musician. She has three Compact Disc recordings to her credit.
